Passengers on the Eurostar have been met with seven hours of delays after a fatality on the tracks in France. “Due to two persons struck by trains near Lille Europe, we’ve delays and cancellations to our services all evening,” the operator said in a statement on X, adding: “We apologise to everyone affected and advise changing your journey for a different travel date.”

Services between London St Pancras and Paris Gare du Nord ground to a halt just after 3pm. One Paris-bound train that left at 2.31pm (due to arrive before 6pm) was still reportedly crawling through northern France at 9.45pm, according to The Telegraph.

Several later departures, including the 4.01pm, 6.01pm and 8.01pm services, were cancelled outright.

Social media quickly filled with complaints.

“I’ve been on the 9032 for seven hours and we’re still not in Paris,” wrote Millie Race. “Will we get full compensation?”

Another traveller, posting as James, said: “I’m going to need my full ticket refunded plus compensation. Five hours on board and now another three-hour delay.”

Passengers who never left the platforms fared little better.

Naomi Sanger, waiting on the 4.31pm from Paris, told fellow customers the concourse was “a total joke, food and drinks running out, air-con off, coffee machine broken and even the card machine down”.

It is the second fatality to hit the Eurostar route in under a week, after a separate incident in France last Wednesday.
